SCHOOL CLOSES FOR SUMMER BREAK on FRIDAY 13th JULY @ 12:30
Yesterday evening, our ID6 students shared their exhibition with parents and school staff. This was a wonderful evening that celebrated the students’ learning in ID6 and was the final part of their learning journey at HSV and of their primary years.
Their exhibition, A Twist in the Times, celebrated the work and times of Charles Dickens, with a particular focus on Oliver Twist, the theme of their musical. The evening started with a demonstration of a typical gym class of the times and was followed by a more elaborate demonstration of a gym class today, incorporating gymnastics, acrobatics, games and archery. There was then an opportunity to view exhibits of learning including artwork, literacy, mathematics and technology. Finally, their performance of an adaptation of Oliver Twist showcased their performing arts skills through drama and music.
It was a truly wonderful evening that made all of us at HSV very proud. Well done to ID6 2017-18!

ID3K’s assembly was about what they had learned about their IPC theme Active Planet. They reported about what happens during an earthquake and when volcanoes erupt, what makes a strong structure that is more likely to survive and earthquake and performed a song.

Today we have enjoyed two class assemblies performed by ID2K and ID3J.
First up it was ID2K. Their assembly was based on their IPC theme I’m alive. They shared what they have learned about the seven life processes that tell us if things are alive. To help them remember they think about Mrs Nerg: movement, reproduction, sensitivity, nutrition, excretion, respiration and growth. They performed two songs and asked the audience to guess the animals they had drawn from the clues that they gave.
Later in the morning, ID3J shared their learning about their IPC theme Active Planet. Through song, action and demonstration they shared what they had learned about volcanoes and earthquakes. They showed the parts of a volcano, what happens when tectonic plates meet and what it might be like to live near a volcano. Some ID3J students thought it would be good to live near a volcano – but only if it’s extinct!

What a busy week the Reception children have had! On Monday they visited the Gemeentemuseum, one of their cultural visits for the year and on Tuesday they experienced their first Games Day.
The focus for the cultural visit was to look at the use of colour in different paintings and to learn about mixing colours. Everybody put on a cape to turn them into superhero colour spotters! After talking about paintings from famous artists such as Mondrian and Kandinsky, the children were able to paint their own pictures using primary colours. It was an exciting morning topped off with, for many children, their first experience of travelling by coach.
Games Day is a fun morning for the IDR and ID1 children. They have the opportunity to try out lots of different activities, practising a range of different skills, including jumping, throwing and climbing.

SCHOOL CLOSED FOR PENTECOST MONDAY 21ST MAY
This week saw the entry points for the final IPC themes for this academic year.
ID6 stepped back in time to experience life in a Victorian school. All children and teachers dressed in traditional clothes and carried their lunches in tea-towels and in boxes because plastic was not invented! They faced a morning of drills, inspections and were not expected to speak until spoken to! The boys and girls took this challenge very seriously and played their roles perfectly. They enjoyed a variety of lessons – learning to use an ink pen for writing and trying not to get ink on their hands. In the afternoon the pupils participated in physical education w
ith Ma’am Suzanna and learned to drill to a beat. At the end of the day, children agreed that the experience gave them a great insight into to the changes in the education system over the years. They all agreed that it was good to travel back to the present day and to be 21st century HSV pupil.
